Making a Small, Rented Space Feel Like Home (Without Losing Your Deposit)
My first apartment had a radiator that only worked on alternate Tuesdays, a kitchen the size of a phone booth and walls painted a colour I can only describe as “tired magnolia.” The tenancy agreement made it very clear I was not allowed to change any of it.
For months I lived there like a guest. Then one evening I realised I’d been “about to make it nice” for nearly a year. That’s when I started.
Home is a feeling, not a mortgage
You don’t have to own a place for it to be home. Home is where you can exhale. Where your things are. Where you can sit in silence and not feel like you’re waiting for something.
That feeling doesn’t need square footage. It needs a few intentional choices.
Renter-friendly upgrades
Lighting first. Overhead lights are the enemy of a cosy home. A couple of lamps with warm bulbs will change a room more than almost anything else, and they come with you when you move.
Textiles. Rugs, throws, cushions and curtains add warmth, soften echoes and hide a multitude of carpet sins.
Plants, real or very convincing fakes. Something green makes a space feel alive. If you kill every plant you touch, start with something famously hard to kill.
Removable everything. Adhesive hooks, peel-off wallpaper, freestanding shelves. Read the instructions and test a small area first, because your deposit is watching.
Edit ruthlessly
Small spaces fill up fast. Every few months, I do a sweep. If I haven’t used it, don’t love it, or am only keeping it out of guilt, it goes.
Less stuff means less cleaning, less stress and more room for the things you actually care about.
Make it smell like you
Smell is underrated. A candle you love, fresh air, clean laundry, coffee in the morning. When your home smells good, it feels good to walk into.
Create one corner that’s just for you
Even in the smallest space, carve out one spot that’s entirely yours: a reading chair, a little desk, a windowsill with a cushion. Somewhere that says “you can rest here.”
Live there now
You don’t need to wait for the dream house to have a home you love coming back to. Your life is happening in this space, right now.
The radiator still only works on alternate Tuesdays. But I have lamps now. And a very resilient plant named Gerald.
